Summer Percheron
Highlights (July-August 2004)
It's
been the usual busy summer at Lucasia Ranch... one of the highlights
included success with the Percheron part of the ranch. The Black Stallion
on the left is a three year old and his name is Lucasia Duramax. He
earned Reserve Champion Stallion at the Calgary Stampede. The
Grey Stallion (right), Lucasia Diamond Bud, a two year old, received
Reserve Champion Stallion at the Brandon, Manitoba World Percheron
Congress. Diamond Bud earned Grand Champion Stallion at the Alberta
Provincial Percheron show in Olds and Duramax gained Reserve honours.
A yearling filly, Lucasia Rose Bud, was awarded 2nd in her class at
Calgary and Reserve Champion Junior Mare at Olds. As well, Lucasia
Ranch received the banner at the Provincial Show for Premium Breeder. |

Lucasia
Ranch - News Corral (early July, 2004)
Fun was had by
all lately (well... except maybe for Flint Lucas) as German visitor,
Nicole, tried her hand at hair-cutting.... Flint was the "lucky",
if somewhat reluctant, recipient of the haircut. Actually, there
is another side to this story... Flint bet Nicole that she could
not open and close one of the tougher livestock gates on the ranch...
guess who lost that one!! Enjoy the stages of the "stay at
home ranch salon" below!!

Claudia
& Nicole preparing an
authentic German supper
|
We're well into
June at Lucasia Ranch - moisture has been excellent this spring
with weekly rain. The grass is coming well and brandings are done
at most area ranches. Lucasia enjoyed reasonable weather for its
annual branding (held this year on June 11) ... a few sprinkles
landed on calves and cowboys but the serious showers waited until
after the branding supper was over.

At
the supper table...
Ontario & British guests
- a good combination of fun!
|
Lucasia has
had spring guests from England, Germany and Canada lately. It's
been fun getting to know these folks, some of whom enjoyed long
enough visits to really feel like part of the community by the time
they headed home. Two such guests were Nicole and Claudia from Germany.
We had the pleasure of visiting with these gals for several days
and even had the opportunity to sample some authentic traditional
German cooking. Nicole and Claudia prepared a wonderful Sauerbrauten
and dumpling meal one evening!!
A special request from Judy Lucas to all past and future guests
- if you have a recipe that you are fond of, please bring it or
send it for the new Lucasia Ranch guest recipe book - to be released
sometime in the future. Below is one of Judy's much-used, well-loved
recipes:

Mid
May , 2004
May has brought
some snow to our Lyndon Creek Valley... so much in fact, that we
brought our Percheron mares into the immediate ranch yard where
we could watch them during foaling.... they've certainly made themselves
right at home - coming up onto the front lawn and even helping themselves
to the tulips!!
Calving is progressing - it's a little tough for the cows and calves
in this cool, wet weather but the moisture is very welcome.
